We’re kicking off the reactivation of our website and social channels with the first in an ongoing series of essays by Northern Illinois DSA members. Each writer takes on a version of the same question: Why Socialism?

These essays are from individuals and are personal to them. They may reflect the different paths that brought us here—why we believe socialism offers real answers in this moment, and why we’ve chosen to organize through DSA. More essays are on the way – this is just the start. If you'd like to contribute your perspective, email us.

Only An Organized Working Class Can Build a Better World

by Evan M.

Right now, America is at a crossroads.

The cost of living keeps rising while wages stay the same. Our  government uses taxpayer money to fund wars, support coups, and commit genocide abroad. Immigrants and political dissidents are detained and separated from their families. Every year, things get harder for working people while CEOs and billionaires take more than ever.

Under the guise of “Making America Great Again”,  politicians demonize immigrants, people of color, women, queer people, and activists to distract from the real root of our problems - capitalism

This system allows a handful of wealthy elites to control our government and use it to serve their own interests. Even in the richest country in the world, our leaders choose to fund endless wars and genocides instead of caring for our communities, housing the homeless, or protecting the marginalized.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. We all deserve a world where everyone can live with dignity. A world where no child goes hungry, where people don’t lose sleep over rent or medical bills, and where democracy works for the people, not for the wealthy few.

A better world is possible, but only if the working class gets organized and takes action. Across  the country, working-class people are fighting back. Socialists, organizers, and everyday people are showing that when we come together, we have real power.

The Democratic Socialists of America are building that organized working class movement to put power back in the hands of the people. If you want to get involved, please join us at Northern Illinois DSA.
